Handvo/Bhakhro
Handvo/Bhakhro is one of my dad’s favorite tea time snacks, as I’ve grown older and moved away from home it is still one of the things I’m nostalgic for. Chai, bhakhro, and a big bowl of chevdo round out a perfect breakfast for me. So many people have a million ways to make it, but I think this way is the best and the easiest. I love baking them in cupcake tins or smaller trays so you get more crispy edge pieces. In addition to that I always try to bake it really thin so that you get this wonderful crunch all the way around. This dish can easily be…

Khata Puda
My mom’s side of the family is HUGE, and they’re all pretty close. When I was younger I have great memories of my Mami Ma and Ba teaming up to dole out food left, right, and center. One single text message for dinner could round up at least 20 of us at any given time. My Mami Ma used to make Khata Puda in a paint bucket form Home Depot and I always used to think she was overshooting the amount my uncles could eat. Lo and behold, every single pudo would be gone in a flash. After my Mami Ma passed this was the memory of her that I…

Spicy Jalapeño Poppers
Jalapeño poppers are every 90’s kid’s classic bowling alley snack. We used to get french fries, poppers, and pizza at birthday parties all the time. As I grew up I would always think about how I could update this snack to be more flavor friendly. Sunday Gameday’s are normally my chance to try out new appetizers on friends and family, so I decided to take the leap and make these! The crust came out so wonderfully crunchy and flavorful, the inside was piping hot and melty just how I was hoping for. Feel free to doctor up this recipe however you see fit it definitely is adjustable but this is…

Iced Caramel Macchiato
The fall season is finally here and the world is in full swing PUMPKIN mode! Here in Dallas we still will get warm enough weather that I would prefer an iced coffee to hot so this is my perfect go-to drink! It is caramel instead of pumpkin which is perfect for that fall flavor but also it is widely available enough to make year-round. I actually transitioned to drinking oat milk this year and this drink is AMAZING with oat milk. Definitely try it out if you’re looking to try to get that perfect coffee shop experience at home! Thanks to Tania Sheff for the original recipe, I have taken…

Dabeli
Dabeli are the perfect street snack in Gujarat. They’re tangy, spicy, a little sweet, crispy and crunchy around the edges but also buttery from the ghee. I can eat about 10 of these on the spot, the filling is just so lip-smacking. You definitely can’t stop at just 1. I started making these a few years back when I entered them in a food competition, and I’ve been hooked ever since. The only Dabeli Hardik had ever had were the frozen variety, I made these fresh for him when he was here for a visit and he’s a fan! I serve these up piping hot with a little bit of…

Garlic Jalapeño Everything Bagels
My little cousin and I are big fans of everything bagels. In quarantine, I have tried my hand at several bread recipes and thought, why not bagels? I decided to spice up these bagels exactly how I would want them in a shop. SPICY. I love garlicky foods and bagels are no exception. These bagels are amazing and really are the perfect replica of an authentic bagel shop. When you get a fresh, homemade bagel its chewy and springy right out of the oven. Top them however you’d like cheese, more jalapeños, chili powder… the list goes on. This is a fun recipe to make with kids and its a…

One Pot Pav Bhaji
Around the world there are several meals that started out as scraps and were turned into classics. American hot dogs, broken rice, and pav bhaji are essentially dishes produced from items that were deemed inferior or leftover from making other entreés. Pav Bhaji is a quick and easy meal for those on the go. I think I can make this in under 30 minutes with only one pot! There are several great recipes out there but I feel like this is the closest to that authentic Mumbai taste! Ingredients: 1.5 onions, diced 1 stick or 1/2 c. of butter + additional for garnish (oil can be used if keeping this…

Moong nu Khatyu
When Hardik first came to visit me in Texas, the first thing he wanted to eat was Moong Bhat. I am sitting there thinking to myself, “Are you crazy?!!? Moong bhat?! Over pizza?! BUT WHY?!” What can I say y’all I am marrying a desi boy through and through. All of the men in my family love moong too and I can’t figure out why. All of the women in my family pass on it every single time. To be honest though, when I took a bite of this moong nu khatyu it was like the Snickers bar commercial for my soul. I could feel my heart coming alive again…

Thikhi Puri
Both of my grandmothers always have a container of thikhi puri in their pantry. No matter what, my nose would sniff it out, even as a 5-year-old. Thikhi puri is one of those things that is really reminiscent of childhood for a lot of Gujarati kids. Even as we grow into adults, its something that reminds us of home. During quarantine, its all about making the day a little extra special. Hot puris are an easy way to create that little pocket of nostalgia in under 30 minutes! Ingredients: 2 c. wheat flour 3/4 c. water 1 tbsp. neutral oil 1 tsp. sugar 1 tsp. ground cumin (jeera) 1/2 tsp.…

Trishna’s Crescent Pinwheels
One of my best friends, Trishna, brought this recipe with her to my birthday party a few years ago. Needless to say, it was a HIT! This is the ultimate game day recipe with so much versatility. You could easily make this sweet with peanut butter or chocolate spread. Similarly, you can go the savory route which is what I have done below. My family can eat these by the fistful so I definitely recommend making 3-4 trays worth! Experiment with different flavors if you want and a side of marinara sauce for dipping wouldn’t hurt either! Ingredients 1 can refridgerated crescent dough (I prefer Pillsbury) 4 oz. flavored cream…
